Friend to Friend - Blendabilities Background

This is the second card I made from the blendabilities background created in class on Wednesday.  This time I focused more on the neutral colours of the paper, and using the same stamp set as in the first card the image of the grass was stamped, using black stazon ink, directly onto the photopaper.

The image was then die cut using the oval framelits, and adhered directly to the soft suede card base.  The whisper white layer was embossed with the Argyle folder, and was die cut in the upper middle with an oval framelit die using one size smaller. This created a window for the image.
To form a frame around the image, I took the two sizes of oval framelits and die cut the soft suede forming an oval frame.
Some 1/8" chocolate chip taffeta ribbon was adhered to some Very Vanilla seam binding and then attached to the embossed layer below the image.  In the middle of the bow a wood embellishment was adhered, with a small flower glued in the middle.  I coloured a small rhinestone with a dark crumb cake blendability and put it in the center of the flower.

You're Great - Blendabilities Background

This morning I made 2 cards from one of the photopapers upon which a blendabilities background was created.
This is the first one.  In both cards I use the stamp set "World of Dreams".  Below this picture is an image of the blendability photo paper that I used.

After deciding what stamp set I wanted to use, I then identified what area of the photo paper I wanted to stamp on.
The image was stamped with Versa Mark and embossed with black embossing powder.  Then it was die cut using the Deco Labels framelits, which was matted with Basic Black cardstock.  It was then mounted on an Apothecary Framelit Wild Wasabi die cut using dimensionals.  Using the 1/8" hand held punch, holes were punched at both ends of the Wild Wasabi die cut, and Wild Wasabi seam binding inserted through them.  I only used small pieces of the seam binding for each end.  One end of the ribbon was taped to the bottom of the die cut, and the other end to the underside of the background paper.  A bow was added at the left hand side.

For the background I used the Iresistably Yours DSP (SAB) sponged with Wild Wasabi ink. This was matted with Whisper White cardstock and then to a Basic Black basic card.

The sentiment is from "From the Garden" and is stamped with Black Stazon ink.

From the remnants, I punched little flowers using the Itty Bitty flower punch in the Itty Bitty Accents pack.  I curled the petals up a bit, and attached them to the card using glue dots.  A rhinestone was added to the center of each flower.

Class on Backgrounds made with Blendabilities

What a fun evening we had.  It was a little messy, but everyone was giggling, laughing, oohing, ahhing, and commenting on other classmates backgrounds.
Yes, it was Blendability background night.  See the tutorial here

My plan for them was to create 2 different backgrounds using 3 or 4 blendability colours. Photo paper was used because SU does not carry glossy cardstock anymore. But they had so much fun they didn't want to stop.  Finally after 4 backgrounds I had to "pull the plug" you might say.  There were 2 cards to be made and we were running out of time.

Here are some of the backgrounds created:

 

The student was a bit disappointed with this first attempt, but I loved it, and it has so many possibilities.  Colours used: Bermuda Bay, Cherry Cobbler, Daffodil Delight, and Crumb Cake.  Spritzing with a bit more alcohol would have helped here.

I loved this one too.  Colours used:  Wisteria wonder, Calypso Coral, Night of Navy, and Wild Wasabi.

Here you can see the strokes left by the pen - like a watercolour background.  Colours used: Old Olive, Wisteria Wonder, Daffodil Delight, Medium Crumb Cake.

The cards planned for the evening involved the use of the Butterfly framelit, but some problems occured with the die cutting.  I demonstrated the use of dryer sheets and wax paper, confident it would work well, but apparently photo paper does not die cut well.  We spent a considerable amount of time poking out those little "pokies" out of the butterfly, but it was all done in good humour.

After the butterflies were ready, they were mounted onto cards.  Each card looked different, because I let them choose which background they were going to use.

The stencil that was left did not occur as planned either.  For some the butterflies were cut too close together, and some (the majority) die cut the butterflies too far apart (despite instructions not to do so).  As a result the stencil was not able to be used as planned for the second card.
The students came up with the idea of using only half the stencil i.e. only 1 butterfly per card with the card turned horizontally.  I didn't get a picture of their creation, but I thought it was a great plan.

So just picture the stencil cut in half, and only 1 butterfly used.  The second butterfly was used to make a 3rd card.

The students had so much fun making the backgrounds and then designing their own cards that they were reluctant to leave.  "Good class"  "Love the technique"

This just shows you that as a teacher you have to remain flexible, and sometimes let the students do their own thing within boundaries.

Happy Easter - Indescribable Gift - Blendabilities Background

This time I used the blendabilities background to make an Easter card.

The colours used for the background:  Crumb Cake, Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, and Wisteria Wonder.

This card was made a little differently.

I took a piece of 12 by 12 Whisper White cardstock and cut it to a size of 5 1/2 by 12.  I then scored it into 3 equal portions, at 4, and 8" making it a trifold card.

In the middle section, I marked a 1/2" mark all the way around, and with my trimmer, I cut the center portion out - leaving a 1/2" frame.  The completed image panel will be placed behind this frame.

The image, from Indescribable Gift, was stamped on the blendabilities background using Black stazon ink.  The sentiment is from Teeny Tiny Wishes.

The image piece was trimmed down to fit behind the window frame and double sided tape was used to secure the piece.

Double sided tape was placed on the front third, and it was adhered over the middle portion thus covering up the back of the frame.  Now we have a regular card.

On the inside, a piece of Whisper White was matted with Melon Mambo, stamped with the Easter sentiment and adhered to the back of the card.

Happy Birthday Moon Lake

I again use the blendabilities background to stamp an image from Moon Lake.  I just love doing this technique, but alas there is another technque that I want to try - but not for this card.

Colours used for this background:  Old Olive, Daffodil Delight, Coastal Cabana, Crumb Cake

The image, from "Moon Lake" was stamped with Black Stazon ink directly onto the background paper, and then the image was die cut using the Windows collection framelit die.  This was adhered to a piece of Crumb Cake that had been die cut using the Apothecary accents framelit.  This in turn was added to a Bermuda Bay die cut using the other shape of the Apothecary accents framelit.  Both Apothecary Accent dies were paper pierced using the paper piercing pack and paper piercer.  Also, all edges were sponged with Early Espresso ink.  The sentiment, from "Petite Pairs", was punched with the small oval punch and adhered just below the image.

The base card is Bermuda Bay cardstock, layered with Very Vanilla cardstock embossed with the Decorative Dots embossing folder.  The edges of these were sponged with the Early Espresso ink as well.


Horizontally, in the middle, is a piece of Crumb Cake cardstock matted with Bermuda Bay.  I trimmed the long end of a piece of 1 1/4" striped Bermuda bay ribbon and frayed it, and then attached it to the horizontal band.

The image piece was attached to the middle of the card over this band.

Bloom with Hope Happy Birthday - with Blendabilities background

This is another card made with a background I created using various colours of blendabilities.  The tutorial for this technique can be found here


These are the colours of the blendabilities that I used to create the background for this card:  Melon Mambo, Coastal Cabana, Daffodil Delight, and Wisteria Wonder

This is a 5 by 5" square card with an Early Espresso cardstock base.  The next layer, Melon Mambo, is the largest of the Square framelit dies and is scalloped on all sides.

The image was stamped with Black Stazon directly onto the coloured glossy cardstock. The flower and the stem is from "Bloom with Hope", but the leaves are from "Peaceful Petals".               

The image was trimmed to fit in a Bermuda Bay frame that was made by placing 2 sizes of the square framelits together and running it through the Big shot.  The image and frame were attached to the melon mambo square using dimensionals.

The sentiment, from "Remembering Your Birthday" was stamped with Basic Black ink on Whisper White cardstock and matted with a left over piece of the blendabilities background and  attached to the bottom of the frame.

To complete the card, 3 rhinestones were placed in the two upper corners.

Also used was Glossy Cardstock but photo paper could be used.

Two Butterfly cards using Blendabilities background

These two cards will be made in the next class (Feb. 25).  They are created from a background I made yesterday using some colours of blendabilities and rubbing alcohol on glossy cardstock.

The colours used for this background :  Cherry Cobbler, Coastal Cabana, Pumpkin Pie and Crumb Cake.  Again, I used the darkest shade of the colours with the exception of Crumb Cake.

Card One:

 I know you can't see the background colours very well in the butterflies, but wait for the next card.

Using the medium sized Butterfly framelit two butterflies were die cut from the background and attached to a whisper White background which had been embossed with the Filigree embossing folder.  This was matted with Melon Mambo cardstock, and attached to a Whisper White card base.


There is no sentiment for this card, and that was done on purpose.

Card Two:

After I die cut the butterflies, I was left with a butterfly stencil - which I decided to make into a new card.

You can see the background much better here.

The butterfly stencil was trimmed, and matted with Whisper White cardstock and then with Melon Mambo cardstock.  At the top and bottom end I attached a piece of Melon Mambo cardstock which had been die cut using the Finishing Touches framelit die.  This whole unit was attached to a Whisper White base.

In the middle of each butterfly stencil, are two butterflies that were die cut using the smallest of the butterflies in the Butterfly framelit die collection.  Before attaching them they were embossed with the Decorative dots folder.  Of course a card has to have bling, so a row of rhinestones was added to the center of each of these butterflies.

These cards could be birthday cards, anniversary cards, thinking of you, Just because, etc.

Thinking of You - Wetlands with Blendabilities background

I made quite a few samples of card fronts using the technique I described in my tutorial here Today I used the backgrounds to make cards.
I'll post each card separately, as I used various styles and different stamp sets to make cards.

For the background of this card, I used the following blendabilities on shiny cardstock (I have yet to try it on photopaper): Bermuda Bay, Crumb Cake, Daffodil Delight, and Old Olive.  I used the dark shades of each of the colours with the exception of Crumb Cake.

Please note that it was hard to take pictures of these cards because the lights caused "flashes" on the card.

Using Black Stazon, the image of the Sandpipers from the stamp set: "Wetlands" was stamped twice near the bottom where it appeared there was a brownish area.

I used no ribbons or embellishments letting the background be the focal point.

The basic card is Crumb Cake cardstock, layered with Bermuda Bay, and then layered with the blendabilities layer.

In addition I used Glossy Cardstock.

Sending Wishes Your Way

This card was made using a new Technique - making backgrounds with blendabilities and alcohol on glossy cardstock.  I did a photo tutorial on my tutorial blog here as I couldn't get my video camera to work.  There's still some learning to do here.

I stamped 3 flowers from the "Petal Poutpourri" stamp set using black stazon ink onto one of my background pieces.  In this instance I used Crumb Cake, Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, and Wisteria Wonder.

The flowers were punched out using the coordinating punch.  The center of the flower was punched from a different part of the background piece that had more yellow on it.  First I used the 3/4" circle punch, and then the 1/2" circle punch.  They were adhered together, and then added to the flower with a dimensional.

The fern leaf is from "Butterfly Basics" and is stamped with Old Olive ink.  The fern beside it was stamped without reinking the stamp.

Once the ferns were stamped, I made an executive decision to use only 1 of the flowers as 3 made the card look too busy.  I added it near the bottom of the card using dimensionals.  A piece of melon Mambo ribbon was attached underneath the flower.

An itty butterfly was stamped and punched out with the Itty Bitty Butterfly punch and added to the top left of the card using a glue dot.
