Floating Panel Gatefold Card with Butterflies

Butterflies are everywhere.  So are this fun fold called a Floating Panel Gateway  card described in a tutorial by Dawn in a video here .

Today I thought I would make this fun fold card to highlight the new Butterfly Brilliance stamp set. I also include butterflies from other stamp sets.

The 5 1/2 by 8 1/2"  Bermuda Bay card base is scored at 2 1/8" at either end, folded in to the center and the folds burnished. This is the Gatefold portion.

On the inside, I placed a 5 1/4 by 4" piece of the new Butterfly Boutique DSP which is only available for this special.

The square panels are "floating" on either side with a folding mechanism.  The mechanism is a 5 1/4 by 1" piece of Whisper White scored at 1, 2, and 4 1/4".  The panels consist of a Whisper White piece which is 2 1/4 by 2 1/4" matted with Bermuda Bay card stock 2 1/8 by 2 1/8".

Before matting them together, the square which will be placed at the top is stamped with the sentiment "Birthday Wishes" from "Butterfly Wishes" and underneath that a layered butterfly created using the Butterfly Brilliance stamp set and coordinating dies.  The square for the bottom is stamped with 3 colours of ink applied with the Stampin markers, using a Sale-a-bration stamp set which is no longer available. A small butterfly is also added above the sentiment.

The floating mechanism is first attached to the inside of the fold.  Adhesive is added to the end with only 1 score line.  It is then added, adhesive side up, with the edge on the score line, and the card closed.  Adhesive is then applied to the other end, and with the card open, the mechanism is folded under and added to the inside.  The matted squares are then added to the area between the score lines.

Added to the front panels is another pattern of the Butterfly Boutique DSP.  Images from the Butterfly Gala stamp set as well as small butterflies from the Butterfly Brilliance stamp set and dies are added to a Whisper White panel die cut with the Ornate Layer die.
The sentiment on the left panel is die cut with the Stitched so Sweetly die and matted with Bermuda Bay. Small butterflies are added below and above it.

Supplies Used:
Stamps:  Butterfly Gala, Butterfly Wishes, Butterfly Brilliance
Inks:  Black Memento, Markers (Bermuda Bay, Calypso Coral, Basic black), Stampin Blends
Papers:  Bermuda Bay, Whisper white, Butterfly Boutique DSP
Accessories:  Brilliant Wings Dies, Stitched So Sweetly Dies, Ornate Layer Dies

More Butterfles, Only Punched

Butterflies seem to be very popular this year, with not one, but two stamp sets featuring these winged creatures in the Occasions catalogue.

The last three posts featured cards made using the Butterfly Beauty framelits. Today's post features a card made using the Butterfly Gala stamp set and it's coordinating Butterfly Duet punch.

The butterflies were stamped with Black Memento on Whisper White, coloured with Mint Macaron blendabilites. They were then punched with the Butterfly Duet punch.

The base card is Mint Macaron card stock, layered with Whisper white embossed with the Layered Petal embossing folder.

On the left is a 2" strip of Love What You Do DSP edged on both sides of Mint Macaron card stock punched using the Ribbon Edge Punch.

Before adhering this to the card base, 1/4" organza ribbon and bow, coloured with the Mint Macaron blendability. is added. The sentiment, stamped in Mint Macaron, is added to the lower right.

The two larger and one smaller butterflies were added to the card front as shown in the picture on the left and Clear Wink of Stella applied to their wings.

Three pearls were coloured with a Blackberry Bliss blendability and added to the upper right.

The stamens of the butterflies were stamped after the butterflies were attached to the card.

On the left shows a close up of the wonderfully detailed butterflies.

All a Flutter -Butterflies Everywhere

I'll never forget the time I went to the Butterfly Emporium on the other side of Toronto.  It was winter and as I walked into a hot humid room I gasped with surprise! Large  butterflies with turquoise wings were flying around everywhere! Their beauty and grace astonished me.   One landed on my head and I stood still with bated breath, not wanting  to scare it, not wanting it to leave.

When I saw the Butterfly Gala stamp set memories of that day came flooding back.  My card today reflects, in some way, those memories.  I wore a polka dot shirt that day, with  dark burgundy pants.

The "Share what you Love" DSP was perfect and provided the colour scheme for the rest of the card.
The card base of Mint Macaron was layered with Whisper White  embossed with the Layered Leaf  Embossing Folder.

On top of this was added a strip of dotted  DSP with Mint Macaron strips punched with the Decorative Ribbon Punch along both long sides. I coloured some 1/4" white organza ribbon with a Mint Macaron blendability and placed it on the left side of the DSP before attaching it to the Whisper White layer.

On a separate piece of Whisper White card stock, two butterfly pairs (each stamp is comprised of a large and small butterfly) and coloured them with a Mint Macaron Stampin' Blendability.  They were then punched with the Duet Butterfly punch and the edges sponged with Basic Gray ink. Clear Wink of Stella applied to their wings gave them an almost  translucent appearance.

Glue dots were used to adhere the butterflies to the card front.  One of the smaller ones was added to the top of the sentiment, which is from "All Things Thanks"; the second one was reserved for the inside of the card. Their little antennae were stamped directly onto the card front.

A Blackberry Bliss blendability was used to colour three pearls which were then placed on the upper right of the card.

Supplies Used:
Stamps: Butterfly Gala, All Thing Thanks
Inks:  Black Memento, Mint Macaron (Light and dark) Blendabilities, Blackberry Bliss Blendability, Mint Macaron marker
Papers:  Mint Macaron, Whisper White, Share What You Love DSP
Accessories:  Duet Butterfly punch, Decorative Edge Ribbon punch, 1/4" white organza ribbon (retired), Pearls, Layered Leaves Embossing Folder, Glue Dots

Tarnished Foil Background Technique

The Tarnished Foil Technique is the technique challenge of the month for a group I belong to.  It's a technique I have wanted to do for quite some time. This technique uses any embossing folder with any colour  of  foil, Stazon ink and layers of  two different embossing powders to create a patina background. I used a tutorial on you tube video here

1.  Emboss a 3 3/4 by 5" piece of gold foil paper and emboss with the Petal Burst  embossing folder.
2.  Apply Black Stazon ink in strokes from top to bottom and side to side across surface of embossed foil.  Dry with heat tool.
3.  Apply Versa Mark covering entire surface
4.  Emboss with silver embossing powder.  Let dry.
5.  Apply Versa Mark in random areas
6.  Emboss with copper embossing powder.  Let dry
7.  Apply Black Stazon ink as in step 2.  Let dry.

Note:  If gold foil paper is used , emboss with silver and copper:  if copper is used emboss with silver and gold i.e colors opposite of the original foil used.

Finishing the card:
1.  Mat the Tarnished foil piece with a 3 7/8 by 5 1/8 piece of Basic Black card stock.
2.  Mat this with a 4 by 5 1/4 piece of Gold foil (cut center out to be used for a later project)
3.  On a 2 by 4" piece of Basic Black card stock, emboss "Hello beautiful" from Butterfly Gala in silver embossing powder - at the left end.  Attached to card front.  Add a 1/8" piece of copper trim above and below this black strip - with a small bow below the embossing sentiment.
4.  Punch 4 black and white butterflies from the Butterfly Gala DSP (SAB) using the duo Butterfly punch.  Attach two to the card front at the centers only. Add 3 clear faceted gems to the top upper right.

5.  Adhere tarnished foil background to a Basic Black card base.
6.  Finish inside.  On a piece of 4 by 5 1/4" Whisper White card stock, stamp sentiments and add the remainder 2 butterfly.

Supplies Used:
Stamp:  Butterfly Gala
Inks:  Black Stazon, Versa Mark
Papers:  Basic Black, Whisper White, Gold Foil, Butterfly Gala DSP
Accessories:  Petal Burst embossing folder, Silver and copper embossing powder, 1/8" copper trim, Clear faceted gems, duo Butterfly punch

Here's another card made using this technique only this time I used copper foil, therefore I embossed with gold and silver embossing powder, and the Tin Tile embossing folder.

The card was finished using the Geared Up Garage stamp, framelits and metal elements.
