Eggshell Mosaic Card - Taken up a Notch

I kept looking at the Eggshell mosaic card and felt that it needed something!  Does that ever happen to you?  You finish a card, but you feel something is missing?

I was using this card as a class project, and I needed some little projects while the eggshell piece was drying, so I made 2 flowers using 2 sizes of scallop circle punches, and coloured a piece of ribbon.  When these were added to the card, now the card felt "done"

Here's the before card:

And here's the after:

Ribbon: 5/8" white organza ribbon was coloured with a Tempting Turquoise marker and blended in with an Aqua painter.  It was set aside to dry.  After it was dry, a bow was made, and attached to the background with a hot glue gun.

Flowers:  Two flowers were made - a Blushing Bride one, and a Tempting Turquoise one.  Three pieces of each one of the colours were punched using the 1 1/4" scallop circle punch, 2 pieces using  the 7/8" scallop circle punch and 2 pieces of Old Olive using the 1 1/4" scallop circle punch.  The middle piece of the flower  was daffodil delight die cut using the Build a blossom die.
After sponging all the edges with their respective colours (except the stampens which were sponged with Soft Suede), a pair of paper snips were used to snip each of the scallop circles between every second scallop.
With a skewer or handle of a paint brush, each scallop was folded around the skewer until all layers were done.
Using a glue gun, each layer was glued together, alternating flower petals of each layer.  The Old Olive one was turned upside down, and the flower hot glued to it.
Each flower was then glued to the Eggshell background.

This card took the students 2 hours to make, but they learned so many new skills in the process.  Each proudly took their card home.

Eggshell Mosaic Technique - Technostamper 361

It`s finally nice to have some time to just make cards and do some challenges.  I`ve been so busy the last few months with craft shows, classes, tutoring sessions that I just haven`t had the time for anything else.

Today was such a beautiful day, that I started outside this morning splitting perennials and getting ready for a plant sale the end of May.  My son had done the digging last night, and today I split the plants and put them in little pots.  The sun felt so warm, the birds were singing, and you could almost hear the trees bursting out in bud.

But this afternoon, I came inside and started mading cards.  I wanted to make a card using the Eggshell Mosaic background technique as I am doing that in class this week.  Splitcoaststampers have a wonderful tutorial that I followed, except I used reinkers instead of alcohol inks.

I`ve been saving eggshells since Christmas, and the shells are well disinfected and dry, so I don`t have to worry about the students getting ill with Salmonella.

I made a 5 by 5`square card using Old Olive as my base, matted with Whisper White, and then Flowerpot DSP.

I used the tutorial to make the Eggshell mosaic background, starting by die cutting an oval using Vanilla Coasterboard.  It was fun breaking the eggshells onto this oval which had matte Modgepodge all over it.  I made quite a mess!

Instead of using Alcohol Inks, I used Reinkers - Old Olive, Tempting Turquoise, and Pink Pirouette.  The eggshells were sprayed with 90% rubbing alcohol before applying the reinkers, and again after.  I just allowed the eggshells to dry at room temperature, but the process could be increased by using a heating tool (very cautiously).  Prior to applying the gloss Modgepodge I sprayed the background with a glitter spray, and when this was dry I applied the Modgepodge.

It took about an hour for the background to dry, but when it did, the edges were sponged with Tempting Turquoise ink, and matted with a Tempting Turquoise oval die cut using the Oval framelits.  The mosaic background was adhered to the die cut using dimensionals.

To add interest to the eggshell background, I added some tiny pink pirouette flowers punched with the flower punch, and rhinestones were placed in their centers.

Behind the oval focal point, an Old Olive banner was embossed with the Zigzag embossing folder, and the edges then sponged with Old Olive ink.

The sentiment is from Butterfly Basics, die cut using the smallest of the Ovals Framelit.

Here are the supplies I used:

In addition, I used:
  • Matte Modgpodge
  • Glossy Nodgpodge
  • 90% rubbing alcohol
  • Home made glimmer mist
  • Eggshells

Altered Valentine Journal with Eggshell Mosaic Heart

I purchased a Christmas apiral Journal at Target for $1.00.  The journal included a pen which you will see in the spine of the journal.
I had some retired Valentine paper (not enouth to cover both front and back - so I used 2 different kinds and covered the seam with a strip or Real Red cardstock) so decided to make it into a Valentine journal.

But I wanted to try a technique first.  This technique will be done in class in the next month or so, so I wanted to be sure I could do it.  The technique is the Eggshell Mosaic Background, and the tutorial is on Splitcoaststampers here

I knew I was going to do this technique so I have been saving egg shells since Christmas.

So, yesterday I die cut a heart using the Heart framelits using SU's Coaster Board (you need a thick cardstock for this so the Coaster Board is perfect) and using the tutorial I finished the project.  Only instead of Alcohol inks, I used Alcohol and reinkers (Real Red and Pink Pirouette)

This heart became the focal image of the Journal.

The eggshell mosaic heart was attached to a doilie die cut using the Darling Doilie thinlet die.  I die cut it in Whisper White, but using heat and stick powder I applied Halogram glitter to it.

The rose I made using the Fun Flower die and Pink Pirouette paper.  The smaller roses are from retired Artisan Embellishment kit.

The word "LOVE" is White Simply Pressed Clay using the Alphanumeric Simply Pressed Clay Mold.  The letters were coloured using SU markers (Real Red and Pink Pirouette).  The clay heart was coloured with a Coastal Cabana marker.  After they were adhered to the journal and the glue was dry I added Dazzling diamonds to them.

I made the corner pieces using a retired Square scallop punch and a 1 1/4" square punch.

Some lace ribbon was added along the spine of the journal.

In addition I used a Pink Pirouette marker and a sizzlet leaf die (retired)
